Collection Manager Humanities

At Tūhura Otago Museum, our collections are at the heart of everything we do and we’re looking for a Collection Manager – Humanities to help care for, grow, and share them in meaningful and engaging ways.

About the role:

This is a hands-on, varied role where no two days are quite the same. One day you might be working behind the scenes improving collection data, the next you could be supporting an exhibition install, helping a researcher, or preparing objects for display.

You’ll play a key role in ensuring our Humanities collections are well cared for, well documented, and accessible both physically and digitally .

You’ll also be part of bringing stories to life supporting exhibitions, research, and public programmes that connect our communities with the collection.

What you’ll be doing:

Caring for and managing a diverse and fascinating Humanities collection

Improving and maintaining collection records in our Vernon system

Supporting digitisation and online access, helping more people engage with the collection

Managing loans, acquisitions, and collection development

Working closely with Conservation to keep collections safe, stable, and preserved for the future

Contributing to exhibitions, gallery projects, and public programmes

Connecting with researchers, communities, and stakeholders

Sharing your knowledge with staff, volunteers, and visitors

Ngāi Tahu Farming (NTF) is the kaitiaki (guardian) of the most significant whenua (land) footprint for Ngāi Tahu whānui, spanning almost 100,000 hectares of farm and forestry land across Te Waipounamu (the South Island).

Ngāi Tahu Farming’s dairy operation currently consists of eight dairy farms across approximately 2,100 hectares of irrigated pasture, supported by a dairy support operation of around 720 irrigated hectares and an additional 550 hectares of mixed cropping at Te Whenua Hou (Eyrewell), located half an hour north of Christchurch.

We have an opportunity for a Herd Manager to join our whānau on a 12‑month fixed‑term basis. The primary focus of this role will be overseeing approximately 1020 milking cows, along with young stock (calves), while supporting farm performance and animal wellbeing during the term.

  • Previous experience working in the tourism industry (desirable)

  • A New Zealand Certificate or Diploma (Level 4 or above) in astronomy, science communication, visitor interpretation, or an equivalent overseas qualification (required if the above experience is not met)

  • A valid New Zealand Driver’s Licence, or the ability to obtain one

  • A current P endorsement, or the ability to obtain one

  • A Class 2 Driver’s Licence, or the ability to obtain one

  • A First Aid Certificate, or the ability to obtain one

  • A strong commitment to health and safety

  • Care and attention when completing routine vehicle inspections and maintaining accurate driver logbooks

  • Strong time management skills

  • A genuine interest in learning and correctly pronouncing reo Māori names and terms

This pivotal role involves leading seasonal orchard operations and contributing to the growth of Ngāi Tahu resources for future generations.

Key Responsibilities – Ngā Kawenga Takohanga

Under the direction of the Operations Supervisor, you will manage a team of 10 to 40 kaimahi at our Amberley Seed Orchard. Your core duties include:

  • Operations: Applying growth regulators and carrying out pollination tasks (including bagging) in accordance with company SOPs.

  • Resource Management: Collecting and extracting pollen, harvesting cone crops, and supporting propagation tasks.

  • Orchard Maintenance: Pruning trees and clearing slash using hand and power tools safely.

  • Health & Safety: Attending Kaimahi Health and Safety Committee meetings and ensuring all team members follow safety protocols.

  • Machinery: Operating equipment for seed extraction, cleaning, and grading as required.

  • Experience guiding commercial clients in high‑risk outdoor environments

  • NZMGA Hard Ice Guide (HIG) certification or active progression toward it (highly desirable)

Developing Guides

  • Strong foundational alpine or outdoor leadership experience

  • Willingness and capability to train toward NZMGA HIG certification

  • Commitment to ongoing assessment, learning, and development

Additional requirements:

  • Current First Aid certificate (PHEC or equivalent preferred, or willingness to obtain)

  • Class 1 driver licence (P endorsement, or willingness to obtain)

  • Avalanche awareness training is an advantage

Formal qualifications are not mandatory if you meet the experience requirements.

Mō te tūranga – About the Role

The purpose of this role is to lead the delivery of exceptional, safe, and memorable guest experiences across all Shotover Jet and Dart River Adventure touchpoints, ensuring every manuhiri receives warm, professional service that reflects our values. As a senior member of the Customer Experience team, this role provides confident frontline support, expert operational knowledge, and proactive leadership to maintain smooth operations and high service standards. It contributes to team capability through coaching and guidance, supports reservations, retail, and beach functions, and helps drive continuous improvement. The role also upholds cultural confidence, sustainability goals, and health and safety requirements, acting as a knowledgeable and reliable point of contact for both guests and the wider team.

We offer a minimum of 32 hours per week, which may include weekends and public holidays. Applicants must be available to work across weekends and public holidays.

We are offering pay of $28 – $32 per hour.
